You managed to decipher a coded message from outer space. The message listed the names of the 22 brightest stars in our Galaxy. You have also managed to note down specific geographical coordinates. The coordinates point to a location on Earth, which is 50Β°48’13.3β€³N 1Β°05’17.0β€³W. The journey starts from there! The location is the entrance of a wormhole that can take you directly to Sagittarius A, the exact centre of the Milky Way Galaxy. You enter the specified location, and as the wormhole opens, you find yourself 26,000 light years away, surrounded by the 22 brightest stars. You look around, and see 22 doors. Each star guards a door. The 22 stars are the 22 Guardians. You have travelled to a sacred place where a package awaits you. If mankind is prepared to receive the gift, the elixir of immortality, you will be able to open each door, one after the other, by answering the questions and completing the tasks the Guardians have left for you to solve. As you complete each task, the Guardians guide you to the next star and the next door opens. It takes an enormous amount of energy to keep the wormhole open. The elixir is within your reach! All you have to do is open all the doors, one after the other, facing the 22 challenges from The Guardians of the Elixir.

Played: 1/7/2017 Team size: 5 Time taken: 51 minutes Outcome: Successful escape!

As someone who loves themed rooms, I personally didn't like the theme too much - it felt like a blank canvas with a series of puzzles within, which didn't resonate with me. However I enjoyed the logic and mental workout used in many of the puzzles, which were broadly more mental than physical.

In The Guardians of the Elixir, as I understand it the digital version is a direct copy of the real life escape room (which I have not played!). This means if you have played it before you won’t be able to play this one – but the inverse is also true! If you’ve been eyeing up playing the escape room version but can’t travel / don’t have the money / literally any other reason, this is almost the same experience!

Guardians is an unusual, single concept game. The backstory has you unlocking the mystical secrets of the 22 brightest stars in the sky to retrieve a magical elixir. This slightly abstract theme translates to a room decorated mainly in black with an array of locked cabinets, each labelled with a star name.

Each uses an identical three digit lock, and I had a nasty premonition of having to try each potential solution in each of two dozen different locks. Fortunately that's not required. Each sta...
