Having played and loved Logiccastle’s newest and longest room, we went back a week later to play their second-newest and second-longest room. This one has a spy story where you’re infiltrating the control centre for an orbital weapon that you need to destroy – but again, you can pretty much ignore the story and just dive into the solving.
007 is a little less linear than Immortal, with some opportunities to divide and conquer for faster progress, and it moves through distinct areas, each with a different style. It also makes somewhat more use of electronics, though still with an emphasis on purely physical or mechanical puzzles. There’s a lot that’s squarely in the classic escape room style here, and I think Immortal has the edge for originality and how memorable its puzzles are, but the two games share a design style and have similar strengths; if you like one you’ll almost certainly like the other.
The theming is energetic and provides a good backdrop to the solving, especially later on – although that was also the section where an additional light source would have been nice. But again, consistency of theming is secondary; I think puzzles were selected for the game primarily based on whether they’re cool and/or fun, more than how well they fit the story. The upside of that is that it’s a game with lots of cool and/or fun puzzles. And importantly, the puzzle logic is rigorously tight throughout. Each time we struggled to solve something, it turned out to be because we’d overlooked or neglected some detail that, once noticed, made everything retrospectively obvious and satisfying.
007 is firmly in the classic style of escape room – which suited us fine. It provides smart and logical puzzles, and twice as many of them as an average room, combining logic problems that were interesting to solve with physical tasks that were entertaining to do. If you’re touring top TERPECA winners and looking for huge scale effects and performance-driven gameplay, that’s not what’s on offer here; but for a bumper-sized buffet of puzzles, this is well worth catching. 4.5 / 5
