When Columbus set sail in 1492, he held in his hands the key to the discovery of America: a copy of the map made by the German Heinrich Martellus.
The Martellus map showed for the first time the entire known world from Europe to Japan. Martellus has made the map based on Marco Polo's and other reports.
The map got copied a couple of times, but the original version is lost.
Until now, a few months ago a lead has emerged. In the 1470s, the Italian explorer Columbus studied at the University of Pavia. There he met the German map maker Martellus.
Apparently, Martellus hid the original map in one of Pavia's 100 towers.
