You are in East Berlin in the GDR in the 1960s. You were wrongly suspected by the Stasi of spying for the West. Since there is no proof of your innocence, you have to go to prison for an indefinite period of time.
But you are very lucky, because you learned that the prisoners before you somehow managed to break out of this prison. That gives you hope. There are also rumors that before they escaped, they left clues for other innocent inmates in the cells and hid them from the guards.
The change of guards in an hour. Each guard checks the cells before the start of the shift. So you only have 60 minutes left for your project.

There is a limit to how many ways one can plausibly break out of prison. More than pretty much any of the other common escape game scenarios, it's constrained in the types of object and furniture that can plausibly be used for puzzles without looking glaringly out of place. After fifteen or so prison games, the tropes start to get pretty familiar. Final Escape's game is notable therefore not so much in being wildly original, as in simply being one of the best instances of the genre.
