Of the UK’s scary games, Séance is one of the most highly rated by enthusiasts, so we were always going to include it on any visit to the area; it was pure coincidence that we found ourselves there on Halloween. The premise is classic supernatural horror, with a sickly girl and a deal with demonic powers that goes wrong.
The lovely and creepy decor immediately immersed us in the setting as soon as we entered. It’s designed to unnerve and keep you on your toes, and does a good job of it. Our host tirelessly kept up a steady stream of jump scares despite a shameful lack of reaction from our dead souls. Fear is a very subjective quality, and while I can imagine this room being terrifying for some groups it seems aimed at making you startle or shriek not leave you cowering in a corner; and it works at that with dedication, imagination and variety.
The largely linear structure leads you through a gamut of horror staples (of the spooky supernatural sort not the gory serial killer sort); there’s often little that links one puzzle to the next but they all build up the creepy theming and fit within the overall story of a possessed child. In a space that’s lit in dim yellow light, I never had problems seeing puzzle clues, and the feedback and signposting were excellent.
Séance deserves its high reputation: it’s both an excellent escape room and a fun fear experience, hosted with enthusiasm and energy. 4 / 5
